The thioureylene class of antithyroid drugs, which includes methimazole and carbimazole, are most commonly used drugs for treatment of cats with hyperthyroidism. However a variety of other drugs are also available for medical treatment of hyperthyroid cats, some of which are not familiar to many practicing veterinarians. Occasionally, such alternative medical therapies are required because of adverse reactions to the standard antithyroid drugs or for other specific reasons (usually cat owner preference for a “natural” treatment method).
