The diagnosis of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism in cats is primarily based on a constellation of typical clinical features, including the cat’s signalment, history, clinical signs, and physical examination findings (eg, palpation of thyroid nodule). Since many nonthyroidal diseases can mimic the signs of thyroid disease in cats, a complete database (e.g., CBC, serum chemistry profile, urinalysis) must always be evaluated to help exclude other illness. After reviewing this data, the next step is to then use thyroid function tests to confirm the diagnosis of thyroid dysfunction.
