Dogs and cats with underlying endocrine disease are frequently encountered as surgical candidates. The management of animal with diabetes mellitus, hypoadrenoeortieism, hyperthyroidism, hyperadrenoeortieism, or insulin-secreting tumors of the pancreas requires preoperative planning to prevent serious complications during the operative and postoperative periods. This article will discuss the anesthetic and surgical management of these animals in the preoperative period.
